The readymade Johnston showcased some of his speed and ability to separate from his opposition last year filling out a role in the back 50. Representing the Gold Coast Suns Academy in the 2019 NAB League Academy Series, Johnston created options and put himself in a good defensive position to receive the footy and clear it out to options further up the field, time and time again. Not a huge accumulator of the ball, Johnston is already strong enough to match it with senior forwards, and he impressed enough to be named in the Allies’ 50-man squad for last year’s AFL National Championships. With few Academy key defenders running around, Johnston is a unique prospect tied to the Suns.
