Matt Balmer’s scouting notes:

Sandringham Dragons:

#4 Will Setterfield– A really strong first half from Setterfield in the midfield. Unfortunately he copped a heavy hit in the third quarter and they iced his calf up at three quarter time and finished his day early. Setterfield is composed with ball in hand and made use of his 19 disposals well on the weekend. I think Setterfield could be one of the first GWS academy members picked.

#5 Andrew McGrath– A superb game from McGrath running off half back. His disposal efficiency is high and he set the Dragons up from defence. His follow up work was outstanding, often running 20-30m to get the handball receive and used his foot skills to find a target upfield. His 36 disposal effort was his best for the year and expect him to feature heavily in the Vic Metro Under 18 team.

#8 Tim Taranto– 31 disposals for Taranto on Saturday. Taranto is a smart footballer and has really good hands in traffic when playing on the inside. Taranto is also a good mark overhead and took a few marks inside 50 when he pushed forward. Taranto also kicks well on both feet.

#13 Oliver Florent– Another solid game for Florent who continues to perform well. He has the ability to kick on both feet and moves very well around the ground. Florent also went forward and hit the scoreboard twice, giving him a versatility to playing in multiple possessions.

#61 Hayden McLean– The bottom age forward had another good game for the Dragons. He leads up well from the goal square and has a superb overhead mark. McLean reads the ball drop well and roamed inside 50 well.

Northern Territory:

#1 Michael Hagan: Once again Hagan had a flashy game, with moments of brilliance and then 15 minutes of quietness. Hagan didn’t have any consistent efforts and despite kicking two goals needs to work much harder if he is to be drafted. Hagan’s kicking too needs some greater attention to detail and on occasions missed some really simple kicks he should of made.

#5 Brandon Parfitt– A solid 20 disposal game for Parfitt in the midfield. He didn’t stand out much to me in the stands but had a really good second quarter including a strong 100m run. He has a lot of skills that say to me he should be drafted, but he needs to be much more consistent for the whole game.

#24 Jamie Hampton– 26 disposals for Hampton and was NT’s best player in my eyes. Hampton started very well early and quietened down, but he did manage to find plenty of the footy. A much better game than the trial match when I saw him, spending most of the game on Saturday in the centre. Hampton did appear lazy at times, not wanting to chase down opponents hard and will be looking to put in a strong Under 18 Championships for NT.
