WAFL Colts weekly wrap: Winter winds of change sees Peel claim top spot

WITH the Under-18 carnival taking place throughout June, you often see plenty of variations in ladder positions. The sides from below look to make their move, while the teams from the top echelon could look a bit vulnerable. This season has been no exception.

WAFL Colts wrap – Round 11

West Perth 11.10 (76) defeated Swan Districts 7.4 (46)

West Perth narrowed the gap on Swan Districts after a composed 30-point victory over the Black and Whites at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday morning.

After a tight and scrappy first term The Falcons led Swans by nine points at the long break. The visitors were certainly outworking the ladder leaders around the ground with 16 more tackles (41-25) and using their possessions count by compiling 20 more inside 50s (33-13). Koopah Todd was a star in the first half for the Falcons with 18 disposals, five marks, five inside 50s and three tackles. Atem Deng matched that disposal output for Swans also taking eight marks and four inside 50s. The early stages of the third quarter saw Swan Districts kick two early goals from Ryan Letessier and Benjamin Taylor to reclaim the lead that they had in the second term. But from that moment, West Perth kicked seven goals to two and ran out deserved winners.

Bottom ager Corey Rundle was a real catalyst for the Falcons’ fine second half kicking three goals and managing four for the game. Todd continued on his solid first half and finished with 32 disposals, eight marks, six inside 50s and two goals while Callum Johnson added valuable tenacity around the packs with 21 disposals and seven tackles. After seven consecutive wins to start the season, this defeat was Swan Districts’ second in a row and not the kind of performance they wanted ahead of a massive test against Peel Thunder next week. It is the first time that Swans haven’t occupied the first position since Round 2. Deng was prominent for the home side with 26 disposals, eight marks and two goals while Ethan Nordahl continued his excellent 2019 season with 27 disposals, four inside 50s and four tackles.

Peel Thunder 18.11 (119) defeated Perth 3.6 (24)

Peel celebrated their ascension to the top of the WAFL Colts ladder in style with a thumping 95-point win over a beleaguered Perth outfit at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday morning.

The Thunder set up their victory by producing a six goal blast in the first term with Jonathon Ietto kicking two majors as the visitors led by 27 points at quarter time. The visitors extended the lead to 50 points at the long break. Peel were extremely efficient with their 17 scoring shots coming from 26 inside 50s. Ben Middleton and Ietto were prominent in the forward 50, kicking three goals for the half. The second half was a exercise in percentage boosting for the visitors with Peel kicking a further seven goals to nil and running out emphatic victors.

Peel’s key to success so far in 2019 has been a number of contributors that can bob up and produce on a game to game basis. Despite such a thumping win, Peel did not top the 300 mark in terms of overall disposals but still managed over 100 more than their opponent (284-184). Thunder also compiled more than double the amount of inside 50s than their opponents (54-22).

As he done a number of times this season, Bradley Oldfield topped the disposal charts for the winners with 25 disposals, five marks and seven inside 50s. The highly rated Jarvis Piña compiled 21 disposals and eight inside 50s while Ben Middleton was impactful by kicking four goals to go along with nine marks while bottom age star Ietto also kicked four majors. Simon Hayward was a true shining light for the Demons with 26 disposals, six tackles and two goals. A illustration of Perth’s performance was that they only had five players to collect double figure disposals.

Subiaco 15.11 (101) defeated South Fremantle 4.5 (29)

Subiaco gave everyone a glimpse of their 2018 premiership form as they defeated South Fremantle by 72 points at Fremantle Oval on Saturday morning.

The Lions produced their most clinical opening quarter of a difficult season to date kicking five goals to none and led by 30 points at the first break with Tyler Broughton and Nicolas Martin each kicking two goals for the visitors. Both teams kicked two goals for the second term and the Lions were able to keep their handy buffer at the long break. The second half saw the visitors well and truly go on with the job kicking eight goals to two and claim their second consecutive victory and second over the Bulldogs in 2018.

The Lions had any number of contributors over the four quarters with Ben Golding collecting 30 disposals, taking six marks and five inside 50s. It was certainly a difficult day for the Bulldogs but exciting prospect Ira Jetta was certainly a shining light with 20 disposals and nine tackles.

East Perth 9.10 (64) defeated Claremont 7.9 (51)

In the closest game of the day, East Perth consolidated their place in the top five with a 13 point win over the Tigers at Claremont Oval

The first quarter was a tight affair with the Royals leading by two points at the first break. The Royals extended their lead to 20 points at the long break kicking four goals to one. Despite the Tigers making a number of runs at the Royals, East Perth was able to keep their opponents at arms length and collect their fifth win for 2019.

Claremont will look back to the lack of a real key target in the forward 50 as a reason for them not claiming the victory as they had eleven more inside 50s for the game.(48-37). Bottom ager Cody Nash was tenacious in his workrate for the Royals with seven tackles, five inside 50s along with 16 disposals. Ruckman Joshua Ladhams was very solid with his efforts around the ground clocking up 24 hit-outs and collecting 16 disposals and four marks.
