VFLW Round 10 preview – Tigers look to bounce back

ROUND 10 of VFL Women’s sees a number of big games and big names return to the fray. With the second half of the season upon us there is plenty on the line with teams fighting to secure a spot in the finals and leave their mark on the competition.

CARLTON v. HAWTHORN

Round 10 – 13/7/19
11.00
La Trobe University

Carlton may be sitting close to the bottom of the ladder but after a massive game last week the Hawks will need to be at their best against a side still rueing a missed opportunity against NT Thunder. That being said, Hawthorn strung along a few impressive wins before a frustrating loss to Geelong last round so will look to regain some momentum this round. While both sides come into this match with a sniff at victory, it will likely be Hawthorn’s consistency that gets them over the line against the Blues.

CASEY v. WESTERN BULLDOGS

Round 10 – 13/7/19
11.30
Casey Fields

Casey have now lost a whopping five games on the trot after a solid first few rounds, meaning they need to lift their intensity this week to put on a good performance against a side that had a similarly solid start, dipping in the middle before cementing a big win against undefeated Richmond last round. Casey seem to have a few of their big names in the side this week – Lily Mithen for one – meaning that this could be their best opportunity to get a win on the board and start making their way back up the ladder in time for the last rounds of the season and finals contention. It could be an exciting match with both teams wanting to assert themselves on the competition and get their season back on track.

COLLINGWOOD v. WILLIAMSTOWN

Round 10 – 13/7/19
11.30
Victoria Park

Collingwood will almost definitely stay on top of the ladder again this week when they take on second bottom side Williamstown, who despite putting an impressive performance on a few weeks ago have been mostly disappointing this season, staying put at the bottom of the ladder. Though the Magpies are sitting pretty at the top, they will want to boost their percentage this round against the mostly floundering Seagulls, while the Seagulls need a good performance this week to ensure they do not drop below Darebin on the ladder at the round’s end. Collingwood have been clinical in recent weeks with their slick ball movement across the field and ability to convert on their opportunities in front of goal making them a tough opponent for the Seagulls.

GEELONG v. SOUTHERN SAINTS

Round 10 – 13/7/19
1.00
Deakin University Geelong

Southern Saints have had a successful few weeks on the track so will want to go one better again this round when they take on Geelong at the Cats’ second home, Deakin University. Geelong will be wanting to get another win on the board, sitting at four wins from eight starts, so are sure to go hard into this contest. While the Saints got a convincing win last week over Williamstown, the Cats prevailed for a hard fought win over Hawthorn so certainly cannot be underestimated. Both teams have shown that they have plenty of star power and can be hard to stop when on song so it will be a game of inches to see who blinks first and who can make the most of their opportunities across the ground.

DAREBIN v. NT THUNDER

Round 10 – 14/7/19
12.00
Preston City Oval

Darebin have their work cut out for them this week, having only won the one game for the season and getting antsy at the bottom of the ladder. Carlton poked holes in NT Thunder’s defence in the early stages of their match last week, so if Darebin follows a similar defensive pattern they could find some opportunities going forward, with a plethora of goalkicking options who have not had much of a chance to show their skill so far this season. NT Thunder had a big shock and close win, however, so will be ready for another onslaught to ensure they do not get caught under pressure again. Thunder are renowned for their ability to bounce back and pose an prominent threat in each area across the ground credit to the likes of ball magnet Stevie-Lee Thompson, Angela Foley and Anne Hatchard.

RICHMOND v. MELBOURNE UNI

Round 10 – 14/7/19
3.00
Swinburne Centre

This match will be an interesting one, with Uni getting a good win over Casey last round while Richmond had a disappointing outing against Western Bulldogs in their first loss of the season. Both sides will surely be raring to go, and with dominant players across the field for both teams it could be a very exciting match with even matchups across the board. Both teams also have the forward options to go inside 50 and kick bags of goals, meaning this matchup could see the round end with a high scoring affair. However, the Tigers will be without star forward Katie Brennan and will be looking to the likes of Sabrina Frederick-Traub and Tayla Stahl to lead the way.
