Crunching the numbers: VFLW – Round 2

COLLINGWOOD’S Jaimee Lambert leads all comers when it comes to Dream Team Points over the first fortnight of the Victorian Football League (VFL) Women’s competition. The Magpies star is averaging 112.5 points so far this season, with a round-high 129 in the drawn game against Geelong. Her total of 225 points is ranked one in the competition.

Lambert is not the only Magpie to be finding plenty of the football early, with Sarah D’Arcy averaging 101.5 points per game, ranked fourth four total points after an equal-third round high of 105 against the Cats. Speaking of Geelong, Renee Garing has been an inspiration in the Geelong midfield, ranked two in the competition for Dream Team points, scoring 214 points in the first two rounds, including a 98 on the weekend. It was the same score as Magpie-turned-Seagull Jess Duffin, who backed up a phenomenal effort in round one with a 98 on the weekend to slot into third for total points.

One player who has surprised and been a driving force in the midfield is Southern Saints’ Alison Drennan, who racked up 35 disposals on the weekend in the Saints’ big win over Williamstown, to rack up 124 Dream Team points – second only to Lambert. It was enough to move her into fourth overall for total points just ahead of D’Arcy. The next two following suit are Hawthorn’s Tamara Luke and Darebin Falcons’ Meghan McDonald, who have been impressive for their respective teams in the opening two rounds.

Of course talking averages, Northern Territory Thunder had four players who topped the ton last week, with Angela Foley smashing out 120 Dream Team Points to have the highest competition average, ahead of teammates Emma Swanson (116) and Marijana Rajcic (115). With just one game of data however, everyone will be keen to see how they go when they return to the field against Essendon this weekend. The other team to have just one game of data is Casey Demons, with no players topping the ton, but Marlee Tatham leading the way with 78 Dream Team Points – a remarkable effort considering she had just nine disposals, but the 12 tackles certainly helped.

This week marks the first round where three sides have the bye in Darebin Falcons, Melbourne University and Western Bulldogs, which means five of the 13 teams will have had a rest by the conclusion of round three.
