THE two grand final spots were up for grabs up until the final game of round seven. With Collingwood spoiling the dream of back-to-back flags for the Crows, the Lions booked their ticket to the big dance for the second year running with a 40-point win against GWS. The Western Bulldogs on the other hand had to fight their way through a nail-bitting encounter against Melbourne, coming out victorious by just two points.
Although Collingwood was out of the race for the grand final, their players still gave their all in the final round, with four Pies making the Team of the Week. The Lions also had four players represented as they staked their claim for the premiership in their win against the Giants. The Giants on the other hand only had one player represented, which was the lowest of all teams.
Round seven saw four perfect games from four players according to the AFL Coaches Association. Brisbane’s Sabrina Frederick-Traub played out of her skin, kicking four goals to stamp her dominance on the AFLW. Emma Kearney’s 20 disposal performance was instrumental in the Dogs’ mini preliminary final at VU Whitten Oval. Docker, Dana Hooker was the catalyst in Fremantle’s 11-point win against bottom-placed Carlton with her 25 disposals and a goal. For Collingwood, Jaimee Lambert’s 19 disposals helped cause one of the upsets of the season against the reigning premiers in a clash which decided the final spot in the AFLW grand final. All four of these players gained the perfect 10 coaches votes and were locks in this week’s best 21.
As there were many standout players from the weekend, not all can fit into the Team of the Week, therefore some have to miss out on round seven’s line-up. Bulldog, Jenna Bruton is unfortunately one who had to miss out. Her 18 disposals were hugely important in the close win against the Demons, but Karen Paxman gave it her all for Melbourne and had to be included in the best 21. Collingwood’s Christina Bernardi was also unlucky, as her two goals played a part in getting the win over Adelaide.
